In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, we often forget to prioritize self-care. Or sometimes we may feel like our schedule is too full to include a wellness treatment like massage therapy.

When I think of how self-Abhyanga came about I sometimes wonder if “the act of Busy-ness” is as old as time. Was self-abhyanga designed for the person who was simply too busy to go to the local healer for a massage???!!

Self-abhyanga is the Ayurvedic practice of self-massage that offers a world of physical and mental health benefits. Derived from the Sanskrit words "abhi" (meaning 'towards') and "anga" (meaning 'limbs'), Abhyanga involves lovingly massaging warm oil into your body.

Let's explore why Abhyanga should be a part of your wellness routine and how to do it effectively.

Benefits of Abhyanga:

  1. Stress Reduction: Abhyanga promotes relaxation by calming the nervous system and reducing stress hormones like cortisol. The rhythmic massage strokes and warm oil create a soothing sensation that melts away tension.

  2. Improved Circulation: The massaging action of Abhyanga helps stimulate blood flow, which not only nourishes your skin but also enhances overall circulation in the body.

  3. Detoxification: By massaging in the direction of lymphatic flow, Abhyanga supports the natural detoxification processes of the body. This can help remove toxins and waste products more efficiently.

  4. Skin Health: Regular Abhyanga nourishes and hydrates the skin, leaving it soft, supple, and glowing. It can also help alleviate dry skin conditions.

  5. Better Sleep: Many individuals find that a session of Abhyanga before bedtime promotes restful sleep. The calming effect on the nervous system can help you unwind and prepare for a good night's rest.

  6. Pain Relief: Abhyanga can provide relief from muscle and joint pain by increasing circulation, reducing inflammation, and releasing tension.

  7. Balanced Doshas: In Ayurveda, Abhyanga is believed to balance the doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) by using specific oils that align with your constitution or imbalances.

How to Perform Abhyanga:

  1. Choose the Right Oil: Select an oil suitable for your dosha or specific needs. Common choices include sesame oil (for Vata), coconut oil (for Pitta), and mustard oil (for Kapha). Warm the oil slightly by placing the container in a bowl of hot water.

  2. Prepare Your Space: Find a quiet, warm room where you won't be disturbed. Lay out a towel or old sheet to catch any oil drips.

  3. Undress: Disrobe completely and stand on the towel or sheet.

  4. Start with the Scalp: Begin by applying a small amount of oil to your scalp and gently massage in circular motions. Gradually work your way down to your face, ears, neck, and shoulders. NOTE: You can skip this step for wash day.

  5. Massage Limbs: Continue by massaging each limb in long, sweeping strokes, always moving towards the heart. Pay extra attention to joints and areas of tension.

  6. Abdominal Massage: Massage your abdomen in a clockwise direction to aid digestion.

  7. Back Massage: If possible, reach your back by using a long-handled brush or enlist the help of a partner.

  8. Relax: After you've thoroughly massaged your entire body, take a few minutes to relax and let the oil soak in. You can sit or lie down, covering yourself with a warm towel.

  9. Shower: Wait at least 15-30 minutes before taking a warm shower. Use a gentle soap to rinse off excess oil.

  10. Enjoy the Benefits: Revel in the feeling of relaxation, soft skin, and overall well-being that Abhyanga brings to your body and mind.
